Endometriosis

Endometriosis gets its name from the word endometrium, the tissue that lines the uterus or womb. Endometriosis occurs when this tissue grows outside of the uterus on other organs or structures in the body. Most often, endometriosis is found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, in the tissues that hold the uterus in place, on the outer surface of the uterus, and on the lining of the pelvic cavity. It can also grow in the vagina, cervix, vulva, bowel, bladder, or rectum, and there are some rare cases where it has been found in other parts of the body, such as the lungs, brain, and skin.86 It can also lead to very painful menstrual cramps, pain in the lower back and pelvis, pain during or after sex, abdominal pain, exhaustion, stomach upsets, and infertility.

Traditional treatments for endometriosis are hormonal and surgical. A study by the Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research found in clinical trials that massage for women with endometriosis significantly helped to reduce their pain.87 Abdominal massage, as detailed on page may also help to increase blood flow to the area and can, for some women, help to regulate periods—something that can be very welcome with the heavy and prolonged bleeding associated with endometriosis. This is a condition that can have a profound effect on a woman’s life, so gentle, supportive whole-body massage can also bring a very welcome and healing touch.
